For decades, B.C. Ferries vessels were mostly built in Victoria or Vancouver shipyards, but recent contracts have largely gone to European yards.
The president of the Shipyard General Workers’ Federation, George MacPherson, is hopeful this could change. He said negotiations with the new NDP government are planned next month to discuss how B.C. shipyards can bid competitively on new ferry projects.
The provincial Transportation Minister Claire Trevena stated the government is eager to have B.C. Ferries vessels built at home.
